Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), founded in 1969 as the state’s second university, was formerly known as Universiti Pulau Pinang. In 1971, USM provides courses in the social sciences, humanities, and education in addition to natural sciences, applied sciences, medical and health sciences, pharmaceutical sciences, and building science and technology. About 30,000 students have access to these at the undergraduate and graduate levels at its 17 Academic Schools.
In addition, USM has 17 specialized research centers covering a broad range of fields, including molecular medicine, science and technology, Islamic development and management studies, policy research, and international studies. Additionally, it offers consulting, testing, and advising services. To ensure that its students are multi-disciplined through their exposure to various areas of study by other Schools, USM has utilized the school structure rather than the traditional Faculty system. Given the variety of organizations and societies offered, it also encourages students to participate in extracurricular activities.
The Ministry of Higher Education of Malaysia (MOHE) designated USM as a Research-Intensive University in 2007, providing both staff and students with opportunities for education and research. The Malaysian government chose USM in 2008 as the first university in the nation to take part in the Accelerated Programme for Excellence (APEX), a fast-track program that aids tertiary institutions in becoming world-class.
